How do we assist breast cancer patients by caring?

I am writing to share my personal journey as a breast cancer survivor, caregiver, and advocate. When treatment ends, many assume the hardest part is over, but survivorship is a journey of its own.

Following a double mastectomy and three reconstructive surgeries, I continue to live with persistent physical changes, pain, keloids, scars, and neuropathy from chemotherapy. Throughout this process, I discovered crucial resources—such as financial assistance, food support, and specialized post-surgery garments—not from medical providers, but through other patients. Knowing about these support systems early can make a life-changing difference for patients facing recovery and financial uncertainty.

My recovery was further tested just nine days after my surgery when my ten-year-old guardian child was severely injured in an accident. Juggling his care, hospital custody paperwork, and my own medical needs during a three-month hospital stay underscored a vital truth: caregivers need care, too.

These experiences taught me the critical importance of self-advocacy. Patients must feel empowered to listen to their bodies, ask questions, and insist on being heard. My personal advocacy focuses particularly on women of color, individuals with low incomes, and those on state insurance, while supporting everyone affected by breast cancer.

I share my story so that future patients are better prepared and fully informed about the resources available to them. Our stories, voices, and questions matter, and no one should have to walk through breast cancer alone.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
